The UTZ program stands for the sustainable production of coffee, tea (including rooibos and herbal teas) and cocoa. Products that have the UTZ label show you that the coffee, tea or cocoa has been sourced in a sustainable manner. To become certified, farms have to follow the strict UTZ Code of Conduct, which offers expert guidance on better farming methods, working conditions and care for nature. This in turn leads to better crops, a better income, a better environment and a better life for farmers, workers and their families.
our commitment to the environment
Growing greener isn’t just for Earth Day, it’s every day that we care for the environment and our local communities. In 2016, we’ve kept 84% of all waste out of landfills, saved 979,795 trees by recycling cardboard, and donated 3,041,255 meals to those in need instead of wasted.
To date and with our customer’s help, we’ve recycled enough plastic bags to circular Earth 7 times! 10,000 plastic bags equals 1 park bench and so far 1,500 park benches have been made out of recycled plastic bags and donated in your local community. We’re also proud to announce that all GIANT brand coffee, tea, and seafood items are 100% sustainably sourced.
The less impact we have on the Earth means we’re able to give a better future for all. At Martin’s Foods, we’re growing greener every day.

responsible product promises
Protecting the planet means protecting our future. At MARTIN'S we work with suppliers to obtain responsibly sourced products and are continuously looking for new ways to improve our processes.
Bright Farms: Through their greenhouse in Culpeper, VA, they grow produce that is both pesticide and GMO free, picked at its freshest and shipped to our stores within 24 hours. Their process is not only good for you, it is also good for the environment. They use 80% less water, 90% less land and 95% less shipping fuel than conventional produce companies.
Palm Oil: MARTIN'S is a member of Rountable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The RSPO aims to move towards an industry-wide approach to sustainable palm oil cultivation. MARTIN'S is working with suppliers to transition to sustainable palm oil in its store brand products.
Coffee, Tea, and Cocoa: We are always looking for ways to be environmentally and socially responsible. When a product wears the UTZ, Rainforest Alliance Certified ™, or Fair Trade label, you can rest assured that it was made with a few things in mind – better farming methods that can lead to fewer pesticides and better crops, better treatment for farmers, and a better environment.
A commitment to sustainability simply creates a better way of life for everyone. We’re proud to announce that all MARTIN'S brand coffee and tea products are UTZ certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified ™, or Fair Trade certified. As a retailer with the ability to make a difference, it’s a responsibility we’re happy to embrace. By shopping for products with the Rainforest Alliance Certified ™, Fair Trade, or UTZ certified logos, you support these social and environmental practices.

Why go sustainable?
- It lessens our impact on the environment
- It’s part of our commitment to building a happier, healthier world
- It’s a good choice for your family and the environment
In 2016, we’ve diverted 84% of our waste to someplace other than a landfill – through donations, recycling or composting. Our goal is 80% by 2020!
MARTIN'S donates edible food to those in need – while also keeping food out of the landfills. Last year we turned extra food into over 3 million meals and donated over 2.5 million pounds* of meat for our local communities. (*calculation based on Feeding America's formula of $1.72/pound of food)
Recycling is also important. During 2016, we saved over 978 thousand trees by recycling cardboard. And we’re saving more than just trees! Each ton of recycled cardboard saves 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water.
make every bag count
So when is a plastic bag not a plastic bag? When it’s a bench! We recycle the plastic bags you bring in through our Bags to Benches program. It takes approximately 10,000 bags to make single bench and since 1997, MARTIN'S has donated more than 1,500 benches made from plastic bags to local churches, schools, townships, parks and playgrounds. Recently, Keep America Beautiful awarded MARTIN'S with the 2016 Community Improvement Award for Waste Reduction and Recycling. With your help, we’ve removed 15 million bags from the environment! Bring those bags back every time you shop because recycling really makes a difference you can see in our communities.
In 2016 MARTIN'S, along with its sister companies, achieved the goal of using 1 billion fewer bags in our stores! Since 2011, we have been committed to making every bag count and by doing so we used 1 billion fewer bags – enough bags to circle the Earth 7 times! We want to give a shout out to all customers who switched to reusable bags – making a positive impact on our communities and the environment. We couldn’t have done it without you! Let’s keep it going, and push even harder, to reach the next billion bag reduction!
Energy conservation is an important step in maintaining a healthy planet. Over the past few years, we completed numerous energy saving projects, including installing solar panels on store roofs, converting stores to energy efficient LED lighting, and installing HVAC equipment controls that decrease electricity consumption. We also installed submetering in stores that helped us find places where we could be wasting energy. These projects have helped us reduce our energy use by over 70 million kilowatts annually. That has the same impact as removing 10,162 passenger vehicles from the road for one year!
