GIANT FOOD STORES DONATES MORE THAN $9,000 IN FUNDS AND PRODUCT TO ALLENTOWN COMMUNITY Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley, Boys & Girls Club of Allentown Benefit

Carlisle, PA (July 27, 2015) As part of its continued commitment to live and give in the communities it serves, GIANT Food Stores recently made several donations, in cooperation with its vendor partners, benefitting Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Boys & Girls Club of Allentown.

“When it comes to being a better neighbor and supporting our local communities, GIANT is focused on hunger relief and improving the lives of children,” said John MacDonald, GIANT’S director of marketing and external communications. “By partnering with the Allentown community and our vendors, we made three significant donations to assist the Second Harvest Food Bank and Boys & Girls Club.”

More than 20,000 pounds of fresh apples were donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley in early June for distribution to those in need and to the organization’s member agencies. This donation is part of GIANT’s continued participation in the Take a Bite Out of Hunger™ program sponsored by First Fruits Marketing of Washington. The program helps feed the underserved while bringing attention to the problem of food insecurity in the United States. GIANT partnered with ConAgra Foods to donate 40,000 meals, which equates to a $4,000 monetary contribution, to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

"The donation of apples from GIANT helps us provide the freshest and best nutritional food possible to our neighbors who need help feeding their families,” said Paul Lynch, director of Second Harvest Food Bank. “We provide food assistance to nearly 70,000 people each month and, week in and week out, GIANT is a vital and generous partner in the fight against hunger in our communities. We are enormously grateful."

In partnership with Dasani, GIANT also donated $5,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Allentown to assist with efforts to enrich the lives of young people in the community.
