GIANT AND MARTIN’S CUSTOMERS SUPPORT THE GREAT AMERICAN MILK DRIVE BY DONATING MILK TO LOCAL FOOD BANKS Shoppers gave more than $13,000 to buy milk for local families in need
Carlisle, PA – GIANT Food Stores and MARTIN’S Food Markets supported The Great American Milk Drive program in June to help raise funds to purchase highly desired and nutrient-rich gallons of milk for hungry children and families in the local community.
Customers donated $13,544 which will support food banks throughout the GIANT/MARTIN’S market area including Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, FeedMore, Greater Berks Food Bank, H&J Weinberg Northeast Pennsylvania Regional Food Bank, Maryland Food Bank, Mountaineer Food Bank, Philabundance and Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania.
Customers were able to make the donation through a four-week milk drive at GIANT/MARTIN’S. Their donation of $4 equates to one gallon of milk.
“Throughout National Dairy Month, we were focused on powering the play of those in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia by encouraging much-needed, nutrient-rich milk donations,” said Gail Street, vice president, integrated marketing communications, Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association.
Milk is one of the most requested items by food bank clients year-round. But it’s most needed during the summer when kids may be missing out on nutritious meals provided through school breakfast and lunch programs.
On average, food banks are only able to provide the equivalent of less than one gallon of milk per person per year. While Americans are generous with canned and dry goods, milk is perishable and much harder to donate.
“Thanks to the generosity of our customers, local and regional food banks received nearly 3,400 gallons of milk through this summer’s Great American Milk Drive,” said John MacDonald, director of marketing and external communications, GIANT/MARTIN’S. “Hunger affects too many within our local communities and this initiative and other donation events at our stores throughout the year helps families most in need.”
The Great American Milk Drive is a year-round initiative and by donating as little as $5 at milklife.com/give will provide milk to a hungry child or family in your community. By entering your zip code, you can ensure that the milk is delivered from the farm to a local Feeding America food bank.
