GIANT/MARTIN’S CUSTOMERS DONATE RECORD-BREAKING $640,000 TO HELP FIGHT HUNGER IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Carlisle, PA – GIANT Food Stores and MARTIN’S Food Markets’ customers recently donated a record-breaking $640,297 at the checkout to support local hunger relief efforts through the grocers’ Bag Hunger campaign, which ran March 8 – 21, 2015. The previous record of $607,035 was raised last year. This is the first of two Bag Hunger campaigns GIANT/MARTIN’S conducts annually; the second coincides with September’s Hunger Action Month.

“To see this generous outpouring of support for our local food banks and pantries is astonishing,” said Tom Lenkevich, president, GIANT/MARTIN’S. “A big thank you belongs to our associates and customers who once again stepped up to make a difference in the fight against hunger.”

Major recipient food banks include the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Philabundance, Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley, FeedMore - Central Virginia Food Bank, Food Bank of Western Maryland, Greater Berks County Food Bank, Water Street Rescue Mission in Lancaster, Food Resources of Washington County, Maryland, and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in Virginia.

Last year, GIANT/MARTIN’S donated $12.2 million, approximately 45% of its overall community giving, to approximately 100 regional food banks and local pantries through customer, vendor and corporate support. With GIANT/MARTIN’S Meat the Needs program, the grocer freezes meat that would otherwise go unsold, but is still safe to consume, and donates it to regional food bank partners. In 2014, over one million pounds of meat were diverted from landfills and onto the plates of those in need.
