Richmond, VA - MARTIN’S Food Markets officials today announced that store registers will be open for “voting” as it will join forces with its customers to raise needed funds for the Richmond SPCA on Saturday, May 4.

Customers will have an opportunity to donate $1 at the checkout to benefit the Richmond SPCA, and in doing so, will specify if they prefer cats or dogs. At the end of the day, votes will be tallied and the winner will be announced. All greater Richmond MARTIN’S will participate in the fundraising effort.

“MARTIN’S continues to be committed to the Richmond community,” said Jim Scanlon, regional vice president. “Consider donating at the check-out this Saturday to help support our four-legged furry friends and our community partner, the Richmond SPCA.”

The funds raised will go toward the purchase of a new Richmond SPCA transfer van. This van will transport homeless dogs and cats from local animal control shelters to the care and support of the Richmond SPCA.

“MARTIN’S, which donates food for the homeless animals in our care all year long, now is helping us to be able to purchase the transfer van that we need in order to take pets from local government shelters,” said Robin Robertson Starr, chief executive officer of the Richmond SPCA. “The generous way that MARTIN’S helps us with our various needs in order to save the lives of homeless animals reflects their caring concern for animals and for the well being of our community.”

In 2012, MARTIN’S continued its strong support of the Richmond SPCA’s humane efforts by donating its own Companion brand pet food in the amount of $39,964.
