Richmond, VA–MARTIN’S Food Markets made a donation of 55,000 apples to FeedMore’s Central Virginia Food Bank to help feed the hungry in the local community. This donation signals MARTIN’S continued participation in the Take a Bite Out of Hunger™ Program sponsored by FirstFruits Marketing of Washington.

First Fruits Marketing of Washington created The Take a Bite out of Hunger™ campaign to help feed the underserved while bringing attention to the problem of food insecurity in the United States. This is the third year they have partnered with local retailers such as MARTIN’S to make donations to local food banks around the United States.

“Fresh produce is often most in need at many of our local food banks, including FeedMore,” said Jim Scanlon, regional vice president, MARTIN’S. “By partnering with First Fruits Marketing of Washington on their Take a Bite Out of Hunger™ program, we can help ensure those in need are receiving fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet.”

Hunger isn’t just about being hungry. It’s about food insecurity, or not having regular access to safe, affordable and nutritious foods. In 2010, 15% of all U.S. households were food-insecure. Of those, 33% were children, 96% reported that the food they bought just did not last and they did not have money to get more, and 94% reported that they could not afford to eat balanced meals.

“For many families served by FeedMore’s Central Virginia Food Bank, fresh produce, like apples, is a luxury item they simply cannot afford,” said Doug Pick, FeedMore CEO. “At FeedMore, we strive to provide healthy and nutritious food so that our neighbors in need are fed and nourished. MARTIN’S continued commitment to hunger-relief programs throughout Central Virginia is critical to the health and success of the community and we are grateful for their generosity and support.”

This year six retailers have joined the Take A Bite Out of Hunger™ effort, with 200,000 pounds of apples accrued for donation to local food banks throughout the United States.

“We appreciate the support we get from our retail partners like MARTIN’S during this promotion,” said Dennis Jackson, category manager of FirstFruits Marketing of Washington. “Together, we’re not only making a donation but we’re also raising awareness of food insecurity in the United States.”
