Carlisle, PA – As part of its commitment to fight hunger in the local communities that it serves, GIANT Food Stores today announced a $100,000 donation to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank for Project Advancing Hope. This project will allow the Food Bank to expand its warehouse space to meet the growing demand for food, in addition to introducing new operational efficiencies to track inventory and enhance food safety.

“The recent economic conditions continue to affect the ability of more and more of our neighbors in Central Pennsylvania to put food on the table for themselves and their families,” said Rick Herring, president. “As a grocer, we are proud to work with the Central PA Food Bank on hunger relief efforts. This donation to Project Advancing Hope will help to provide even more food to those most in need in Central Pennsylvania.”

The Central PA Food Bank broke ground last summer on a 28,000 square foot warehouse expansion project, which is the centerpiece of Project Advancing Hope. This new space will increase the Food Bank’s rack space from 1,800 currently to more than 4,500 rack spaces. Project Advancing Hope also includes an expanded volunteer area, a commercial grade demonstration kitchen, a clean room for sorting food and an enhanced shopping area for its partners.

“In the last few years the number of individuals struggling with food insecurity, and relying on the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank for their nutritional needs, has increased dramatically” said Kendall Hannah, executive director, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “Project Advancing Hope will allow us to better serve them now, and in the future. We are incredibly grateful to GIANT Food Stores for their support of Project Advancing Hope, and their continued commitment to our efforts to eradicate hunger in our community.”

Over the last decade, GIANT has continually deepened its partnership with Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to provide hope to hungry children, seniors, and families in Central Pennsylvania by providing over $1 million in monetary donations, discounts on fuel, and operational support.
