Founded in 1923 in Carlisle, PA, GIANT is passionate about creating a shopping experience that fits into the lives of our busy customers—no matter where or how they need us. We’re an omni-channel retailer, proudly serving millions of neighbors across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. With more than 32,000 talented associates supporting over 180 stores, 132 pharmacies, 102 fuel stations, over 100 online pickup hubs, and grocery delivery service in hundreds of zip codes, we’re changing the customer experience, connecting families and creating healthier communities for a better future.

We’re essentially a 95-year-old startup, combining fresh ideas and innovation with decades of experience with providing access to quality food – all with the goal of meeting the ever-changing needs of today’s families.

GIANT Heirloom Markets

95 years of heritage went into the making of GIANT Heirloom Market, a small format, hyper-local grocery destination for the urban neighborhoods of Philadelphia.

1923

David D.J. Javitch opens a two man butcher shop called Carlisle Meat Market. His goal? To offer the best products at the fairest prices.

1937

Javitch buys a store in Lewistown, PA and names it the GIANT Food Shopping Center. This store offers customers dry goods and perishable food under one roof, a new concept at the time.

1950's

GIANT begins to move beyond city locations, leading to a path of steady suburban growth.

1970

Our company’s growth picks up speed with the purchase of the MARTIN’S chain in Hagerstown, MD.

1979

Two new savings strategies are introduced to benefit customers: Bonus Buy™ Savings and Everyday Low Prices®

1997

A focus on one-stop shopping begins, and customers are introduced to in-store conveniences like time-saving technology, gas stations, full-service floral departments, expanded fresh departments and a bigger selection of natural and organic products.

2000

The BONUSCARD® is launched to reward our loyal customers.

2004

Sensing a shift in consumer behavior, we introduce our own exclusive brand of affordable organic and Free from items, Nature’s Promise™

2005

The Gas Extra Rewards program is launched to help customers save even more by visiting our fuel stations.

2011

We introduce Peapod home delivery and the first Beer Garden & Eatery opens in Indiana, PA.

2012

The launch of our mobile app puts a new focus on digital savings.

2016

We announced a commitment to Sustainable Seafood Sourcing and continued responsible retailing initiatives.

2018

Green initiatives continue with the addition of the GIANT Reduced Emissions Program, which allows customers to reduce their carbon footprint just by fueling up at GIANT.

Protecting the planet means protecting our future. At MARTIN'S FOODS we work with suppliers to obtain responsibly sourced products and are continuously looking for new ways to improve our processes. 100% of the seafood sold from our service counters is sustainably and responsibly sourced. In addition, 100% of our Nature’s Promise and Stop & Shop seafood items are sustainably sourced – including frozen shrimp and canned tuna.
