GIANT MAKES IT EASIER TO FIND LOCAL PENNSYLVANIA PRODUCTS IN STORE WITH LAUNCH OF NEW PA PREFERRED® SHELF TAGS

First of its Kind Program Simplifies Shopping Experience and Builds Upon Company’s Longstanding Commitment to Local Farmers and Suppliers

Carlisle, PA, June 20, 2019 – To make it easier for customers to find products that have been grown or produced in Pennsylvania, GIANT Food Stores has introduced PA Preferred®shelf tags at all of its 156 stores located within the Commonwealth. PA Preferred is the official brand of food and agricultural products grown, produced or processed in Pennsylvania. GIANT has been a strong supporter of the innovative program since its inception in 2004, which helps the state’s farmers and food suppliers grow their businesses.

Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding joined GIANT Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Matt Simon at a press conference today at the GIANT in Camp Hill, Penn., to unveil the new tag program.

Through this first of its kind program by a retailer in Pennsylvania, more than 900 items including meat, poultry, dairy, snacks, condiments, sauces, craft beer and wine, and even pet food, are now identified by tags with the PA Preferred logo prominently displayed at the shelf level, helping customers easily identify Pennsylvania products as they shop the store aisles. The PA Preferred shelf tags will be displayed in stores year-round.

“GIANT is grateful for its deep connection to Pennsylvania’s farmers, growers and suppliers, and for more than 95 years, we have been committed to sourcing locally grown and produced products,” said Simon. “Our new PA Preferred shelf tags educate our customers and simplify their shopping experience, all while highlighting our unyielding passion for an industry that is, quite literally, the backbone of our business. We couldn’t be more excited to showcase these fantastic products in such a unique way.”

Pennsylvania farmers and agribusinesses are the leading economic driver in the Commonwealth, with 59,000 farm families serving as stewards of more than 7.7 million acres of farmland. With $7.5 billion in cash receipts annually from production agriculture, the industry also raises revenue and supplies jobs through support services such as food processing, marketing, transportation, and farm equipment. In total, production agriculture and agribusiness contributes $135.7 billion annually to Pennsylvania’s economy.

“While GIANT has served as a community cornerstone for decades, they’ve done a remarkable job of keeping their finger on the pulse of consumer trends, as evidenced by this new program,” said Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding. “It’s a win-win for consumers and the agriculture industry alike and will help shoppers better connect their food to the farm, helping to strengthen the relationship Pennsylvanians have with local producers.”

The new tag program comes as GIANT readies to celebrate the arrival of the local produce season in its stores. GIANT will recognize the local farmers it does business with through a multi-faceted marketing campaign that includes in-store signage and displays, social and digital media, tv and radio advertising, billboards and the company’s very own in-store Savory magazine.

From farm names to state identifier stickers and bright imagery showcasing the season’s harvest, the campaign highlights the stories behind the farms and people responsible for bringing the products to nearly 180 GIANT and MARTIN’S Food Markets in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Added Simon, “Beyond resonating with our customers, who are looking for fresh, local produce to round out their summer meals, our local marketing campaign recognizes the supplier partners who help bring ‘local’ to life at GIANT while serving as a tangible symbol of our company’s commitment to the agriculture industry.”

GIANT has been a leader in the buy local movement for many years, supporting local farmers and manufacturers in each of the states where they operate stores, through programs like PA Preferred, Maryland’s Best and Virginia’s Finest.
